Silvio Micali has been on the faculty at MIT, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, since 1983. Silvio’s research interests are cryptography, zero knowledge, pseudorandom generation, secure protocols, and mechanism design and blockchain. In particular, Silvio is the co-inventor of probabilistic encryption, Zero-Knowledge Proofs, Verifiable Random Functions and many of the protocols that are the foundations of modern cryptography.
In 2017, Silvio founded Algorand, a fully decentralized, secure, and scalable blockchain which provides a common platform for building products and services for a borderless economy. At Algorand, Silvio oversees all research, including theory, security and crypto finance.
Silvio is the recipient of the Turing Award (in computer science), of the Gödel Prize (in theoretical computer science) and the RSA prize (in cryptography). He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Accademia dei Lincei.
Silvio has received his Laurea in Mathematics from the University of Rome, and his PhD in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.
Benjamin Ampen is the CEO of Kraken MENA, spearheading the growth of Kraken’s business in the UAE and broader Middle East Region. He was previously the Managing Director for Twitter in the Middle East & North Africa, responsible for building the business and increasing the platform’s audience and revenue across the region.
Prior to Twitter, Ampen was part of Google’s business development team across the UK and EMEA region and also worked at Universal McCann and Detecon Consulting. Until recently, Ampen was a board member of the IAB GCC (Interactive Advertising Bureau) and Chair of the Inclusion & Diversity Committee. He holds three Master’s Degrees in Management from universities and business schools in London, Germany, and Paris.
Prior to joining the Board of the Algorand Foundation, Staci ran the Global Market Development practice at the Milken Institute, where she led its work on capital market development, crypto/blockchain solutions, and innovative finance to promote the sustainable development goals. Prior to Milken, Staci ran JPMorgan’s EMEA public sector practice out of London. Before JPMorgan, she led the Nasdaq’s two markets for microcap companies, and in the public and non-profit sectors had senior roles at the U.S. Treasury Department, the Center for Global Development, and the Harvard Institute for International Development.
Staci has done business in more than 50 countries and has advised and spoken widely on the potential for cryptocurrencies and blockchain to solve real-world problems, and for financial innovation to improve inclusion and reduce global poverty. In addition to the Algorand Foundation, she sits on the Boards of the Global Blockchain Business Council, the Rwandan Capital Market Authority, and the Energy for Growth Hub. She also serves on the advisory committees of the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the European Parliament’s Science and Technology Committee (STOA), the U.S. Financial Technology Association, and Evolution Environmental Asset Management.
Basil Al Askari is the Cofounder and CEO of MidChains a regulated virtual asset trading and custody platform based in Abu Dhabi, UAE focused on both the retail and institutional markets. MidChains was founded after his tenures on Mubadala Capital’s Private Equity team and various commercial finance teams in GE Capital based in the UAE, US, UK.
Ashish is a celebrated serial entrepreneur and philanthropist. He started his first business in 1996 at the age of 15 with a $5,000 loan. Since then, Ashish and his family have driven the growth of the company from a small IT business in Uganda to the globally recognized multi-sector investment group that exists today. Through its businesses and investments, the family now created a presence across 26 African countries in sectors spanning technology, manufacturing, real estate and financial services. Ashish is passionate about enabling, empowering and inspiring young entrepreneurs and women entrepreneurs. In 2009, he launched the families Foundation to foster and support emerging entrepreneurs through mentorship, Mara Mentor is a free online global platform that connects emerging entrepreneurs with business leaders and industry experts. The family's vision is to create a self-sustaining Africa through entrepreneurship.
In 2012 Ashish was appointed a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in recognition of his success and leadership in driving social and economic change in Africa. Ashish advises several heads of state in Sub-Saharan Africa and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Entrepreneurship.
In 2013 Ashish was listed in the Fortune magazine’s 40 under 40 list globally.
In 2015 Ashish was appointed Chair of the United Nations Foundation’s Global Entrepreneurs Council. His business was also awarded the Boldness in Business award by FT and ArcelorMittal. In 2016 Ashish was awarded Esquire Middle East Man of the Year.
In 2017 Ashish was appointed Chair of the Presidential Youth Advisory Group at the African Development Bank.
In 2019 Ashish was named African Leadership Person of the Year for Employment Generation. Ashish truly believes that by 'doing good' you will 'do well'. His Spiritual Leader: Morari Bapu has a huge influence on his life, whose teaching is; Truth, Love & Compassion. Ashish’s current focus is how to in a self-sustainable and scalable way solve meaningful financial inclusion & digital inclusion.
The event kicks off with a welcome reception on the evening of Monday, November 28th, and runs through the evening of Wednesday, November 30th. There are no official conference accommodations, but nearly all official Decipher events will take place at or near the Madinat Jumeirah. Uber is easily accessible in Dubai, as well as public transportation.
GCC citizens do not need a visa to enter the UAE. Travelers from some countries can obtain a visa on arrival while others need to apply for a visa in advance.
